Actors Ted Danson, Dermot Mulroney Talk Fatherhood, Family

February 7, 2012

Former Cheers star Ted Danson, still strikingly handsome and fit at 64, is now a proud grandfather, as the actor announced during an press interview with mom bloggers in Santa Monica last week. Starring in the new film Big Miracle now in theatres, Danson and co-star Dermot Mulroney speak on fatherhood, filming together and other tidbits in a candid and humorous Q&A session.

Speaking on filming Big Miracle in a remote location in Alaska, Mulroney was asked if being a father pushed him to the take on the role in the family drama. “So, I have three kids. I’ve never turned down a good part,” said Mulroney. “So, no. You’re asking do I choose roles because I have kids? No. But, when one like this comes up I jump at the chance because of that.”

Ted Danson, married to his actress-wife Mary Steenburgen for 16 years, announced in the midst of the interview that he had become a grandfather, seemingly overwhelmed by the new responsibility and that he continues to work in his field.

“I just became a grandfather, said Danson while Mulroney chimed in teasing the first-time grandpa. “And I think the reason why I took CSI, which is what I’m doing now, which is in town, with this great cast, great crew, but, to be here in Los Angeles and to be able to be at the birth and to be able to hang around and babysit and do all of that and not be in Anchorage, Alaska. And to be able to work in town at my age is such a treat. I’m so grateful.”

The pair joked about keeping their marriages and love lives fresh while gone for long stints shooting their films. Both men said their wives were supportive and visited them while on set in Alaska. Mulroney displayed a little bit of envy towards Danson’s cushy new job in his own backyard. “So, it’s tough. This CSI at home with the grandkids sounds pretty good,” said Mulroney. A relieved Danson added, “Very lucky.”
