New Documentary To Focus On Impact Of Father Absence In African-American Communities
March 14, 2012

An upcoming television documentary will focus on father absence, specifically the instance of such absence amongst African-Americans. Filmmaker Rachel Miller, and her film production company Little Harriet, undertook the task of delivering the hour-long film, inspired by sobering statistics and other societal factors that have led to the rise of father absence in Black families.
“On My Own” is slated for release this year and features testimonies from single mothers and also remorseful fathers who wish to reignite their roles with their children. Former New York Knick All-Star guard Allan Houston also appears in the film, discussing his Fathers Know Best program and his efforts to promote responsible fatherhood.
Although Miller faced some slight financial hardships in getting the documentary off the ground, she was able to raise funds online and the film is going forward as planned. Miller currently works for New York City television station NY1 News and has performed work for PBS on the Bill Moyers Journal program.
