Jay-Z, Beyoncé Welcome New Baby Girl Over The Weekend
January 11, 2012
Veteran music mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and his R&B diva wife Beyoncé Knowles welcomed their first child Saturday (January 7) night in New York City. The couple named their daughter Blue Ivy Carter, amid some confusion around the name on Twitter – which the singer clarified herself in a short tweet on Sunday. Already a ballyhooed childbirth by virtue of her parents’ fame, baby Blue’s birth was allegedly quite expensive as well.
Blue’s arrival cost the power couple a reported $1.3 million dollars after securing the entire fourth floor of Lenox Hill Hospital, effectively turning the section into a private maternity wing. In an effort to stave off media leaks, Beyoncé checked in with a false name and security cameras throughout the hospital were covered in tape. All hospital employees not associated with the childbirth process were not permitted to enter the fourth floor nor use cell phones.
News sources also reported that the couple shelled out an additional $200,000 dollars to provide beefed up security measures on the floor.
A hospital spokeswoman responded to questions regarding the securing of the floor, stating that Lenox Hill allows such measures when available. The spokeswoman declined to confirm the million-dollar floor fee, saying that the number was exaggerated without offering the exact number.
Not everyone was happy about Blue’s big day, however.
A 38-year old Brooklyn man told the New York Daily News that he was prevented from seeing his twin preemies. Neil Coulon’s wife and babies were on the sixth floor of Lenox Hill but Coulon stated that bodyguards prevented him from entering the Intensive Care Unit – even booting his family out from the waiting area. “They should have been more strategic about it,” he said. “These are children with problems in intensive care and you're just going to take over the hospital like you own it? All I want is an apology.”
