UFC Fighter Balances Championship Dreams With Fatherhood

Hard-nosed Oregon mixed martial arts fighter Evan Dunham may be known to fans as a scrappy brawler infamous for dishing out punishing strikes inside the octagon, but now the married 30-year old is expecting his first child with his wife – and it appears he’s up for the challenge.

Fighting out of Las Vegas, Dunham and his wife Ava Marie are expecting their first child and dad is looking forward to fatherhood. “I think, in the past, I obsessed over training a little bit too much,” said Dunham regarding looking forward to the birth of his child. “This time, it’s been nice to take my mind away here and there.”

Although MMA fighters are typically laser-focused on their training and fight day, Dunham has been dually focused on fatherhood. ”Instead of obsessing over a bunch of training stuff, I relaxed a lot and went to doctor visits,” Dunham said. “I got to see how she was coming along. It’s, more than anything, been a nice break on the mind.”

Apparently Dunham’s eased mind along with his intense preparation paid some dividends. Dunham was victorious his past weekend over a game Nik Lentz after a TKO fight stoppage.
