NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick Shuts Down Race Team For Fatherhood
January 31, 2012
In the competitive world of race car driving, race driving teams are tightknit groups that all serve for the good of the car and, ultimately, the driver. The family environments found on race teams are typically lauded. However for former NASCAR driver and race team owner Kevin Harvick, his own family came first in him leaving the race business.
As owner of the Kevin Harvick Incorporated race team along with his wife DeLana, Mr. Harvick was faced with a tough choice. Although NASCAR fans were not privy to why Harvick shut down his KHI team, it has recently come out that his wife is expecting which led to the shutdown.
“There were a lot of factors that went into the KHI decision, but when your wife tells you she's not starting a family unless you get out of the race team business, that's a pretty big factor in things that are going on,” said Harvick to NASCAR.com
Harvick continued to speak candidly about his decision to choose fatherhood over racing.
“You go through different phases of your life," Harvick said. "You sit down and do your estate planning and it's just you and her. There's nobody to carry on the things that we sat there and built. And how important are a bunch of race cars, 15 years down the road? Not really.”
With Harvick’s wife 14 weeks pregnant, the couple has taken their retirement cues well by taking long vacations and connecting as a family. For Harvick, the revelation is a welcome relief. “DeLana and I are happy to finally let the cat out of the bag, and we're looking forward to the new experiences that it leads to in life,” said Harvick.
