A family in Brooklyn can rest a bit easier after news that their teen son’s death has inspired strangers to donate funds to the financially strapped family. Jhordan Caballero, 18, of Brighton Beach passed away last Friday after rescuing his younger brother and a neighbor from a house fire. Readers of the New York Daily News, touched by the story, opened up their wallets in order to help the family provide a proper burial for their son.
“I am so grateful for all the help we have gotten,” said father Jorge Caballero to the News. “At least this gives us some relief.” Jhordan’s heroic actions that cost him his life started while he was at home watching his eight-year old brother Renzo when a fire broke out. Able to get his brother to safety, Jhordan bravely rushed back into the burning home to save an older neighbor and dial for help but succumbed to smoke inhalation, dying from the injuries later.
Without a home and their son, the family scrambled to find affordable funeral homes to bury Jhordan. With help from a local big-hearted funeral director, the family’s burdens were eased slightly when the director offered to pay for the services.
Daily News readers began to give money to the Caballeros as well. A fundraising effort led by a local Brighton Beach woman has garnered $2,000 dollars so far with more to come from neighbors. Clothes and other items were also donated to the family in their time of need.
