Superbowl Bound Wideout Matt Slater Follows Dad's Footsteps
February 1, 2012
For New England Patriots wide reciever Matt Slater, entering into this Sunday's Superbowl Bowl game will come with the added bonus of having someone in his corner who has been there before. Slater's father, Jackie, also played in the big game in 1979 as a member of the Los Angeles Rams as an offensive lineman. Although Jackie's squad came up short, he went on to have a Hall Of Fame career that concluded in 1995. Matt says his father has advised him on what to expect on the championship stage.
"He told me just to do everything I can to prepare myself for the game on Sunday so that I can live with no regrets,'' the fourth-year player said. "And realizing that this opportunity is not guaranteed to me in my career again, so just to do everything I can to take advantage of the opportunity and maximize it so, at the end of the day, I have no regrets at all."
The younger Slater wasn't around during dad's glory days - he was born in 1985. However, he says his father still speaks fondly of playing for a championship. "It meant a lot to him. Unfortunately it didn't work out for him, but it's definitely a memory he has and will have as long as he lives."
