Take Me Out to the Ball Game:
Life Lessons of Baseball

Spring is in the air and the 2008 baseball season has begun! Our national pastime provides numerous opportunities to connect with your children. This spring, when you're at the ballpark enjoying the game, there are many life lessons you can teach your kids - and that you can learn - from the game of baseball.

Work on Fundamentals. Becoming a professional athlete takes more than just skill; it requires hard work, passion, teamwork, and motivation. Talk to your kids about these qualities as you watch the game and as they talk about their favorite player.

Develop Good Habits. The principle of "keep your eye on the ball" is taught to baseball players at the very beginning of their baseball experience. Develop good habits that your children can model while they're young. Your kids are looking for direction and will follow what you model.

Avoid Costly Errors & Work on Your Control. Pitchers in baseball always try to avoid a "big inning" or an inning where a lot of runs are scored. Practice the art of self control with your children. Call a timeout if you need to before speaking to your children in a tense situation.

You Can't Win Them All. Great hitters in baseball only get a hit one out of every three at bats. As a father, there are times when you might not make the right decision. When these moments occur, it is important to model a positive attitude for your kids. It will teach them how to persevere through tough times, and it will teach your kids that no one is perfect.

Enjoy the 2008 baseball season!
