The Real and Raw Impact of Out of the Ashes

National Fatherhood Initiative's recently released Out of the Ashes: Where a Seed Finds Life DVD and Discussion Guide is having a big impact across the nation.

I recently interviewed several staff in organizations that use Out of the Ashes with diverse groups of dads who are currently or formerly incarcerated. Every person I spoke with said the film resonates with dads at a deep emotional level regardless of dads' race or ethnicity. They also said it's an excellent compliment to NFI and other fatherhood programs because it enhances their impact.

Here is how three organizations use this outstanding resource.

Spotlight > Teen Dads in Texas are Getting the Help They Need

I get this question often by phone and email, "Do you have any programs to help teen dads?"

My answer is "Yes!" Which is why I'm excited to see the work Martin Castaneda is doing in Midland, Texas. In this post, you will see how he is using the 24/7 Dad® program to help teen dads.

5 Things I Learned While Volunteering at a Fatherhood Program

I recently spent 12 weeks as a volunteer for my local 24/7 Dad® Program. After watching nine dads graduate the program, here's what I learned.

Thankfully, we see these types of news stories about our fatherhood programs often. We get excited to see our programs help people. Also, being a native Tennessean, I'm a sucker for a good Tennessee story. Here's one such spotlight...

The Most Vital Cost for a Fatherhood Program

What's the most vital cost for a fatherhood program? Maintenance. When an organization seeks to start a fatherhood program, staff often consider the cost to implement it and ignore or assign lower importance to the cost to maintain it.

4 Keys to Creating an Actionable Father Engagement Plan

One of the biggest challenges I hear from service providers is how to create an actionable father engagement plan.

There are 4 keys to creating an effective and actionable plan:

12 Tips to Help Your Board Members Raise Funds

One of the most challenging aspects of starting and maintaining a fatherhood program is raising funds to support it.

New Spanish Resource > The Importance of an Involved Father (Brochure)

I'm often asked, "Do you have any resources available in Spanish?" My answer is, "Yes!" We do have many fatherhood resources available in Spanish.

In fact, our newest (and VERY popular) brochure is now available in Spanish! What's interesting about this particular brochure, is that it's almost more popular than our "10 Ways to be a Better Dad" brochure. Crazy, right?

In this post, I'll spotlight our newest Spanish brochure, as well as where you can find additional resources for the Spanish-speaking dads you serve.

The Four Roles of a Great Fatherhood Program Facilitator

As the facilitator goes, so goes the effectiveness of the program. We say this in our 24/7 Dad® curriculum and I experienced it firsthand while volunteering with my local county government. The facilitator I sat under was very effective.

In reflecting over the last 12 weeks of sitting in sessions, I was reminded of what our curriculum calls the four roles of a great fatherhood program facilitator.

In this post, I'll review the four roles and offer observations from my experience as a fly on the wall during a local 24/7 Dad® program.

Are You The Best Kind Of Parent?

This post originally appeared on The Huffington Post.

If you’re a parent and self-reflect at all, you’ve undoubtedly wondered whether you’re a good parent. Perhaps you’ve wondered whether you’re the best kind of parent.

As someone who has spent his career helping parents, especially dads, to be the best parents they can possibly be, I can tell you there’s no shortage of opinions on what makes the best kind of parent.

New Grant Funding Opportunity Available from the FRPN

The Fatherhood Research & Practice Network (FRPN) has issued the third request for proposals (RFP). This RFP is intended to support exploratory and descriptive research that will provide insights into previously unstudied or understudied areas. It's expected to make three to six awards of approximately $20,000 to $50,000.

Why Evidence-Based Fatherhood Programs are Important for Dads

Depending on where you look, the term “evidence-based” can have slightly different meanings. Generally speaking, however, it refers to a program that has been found by independent research to affect a change in program participants compared to similar individuals who did not participate in the program.

Researchers refer to program participants as the “intervention group” while referring to non-participants as the “control group.” A program becomes evidence-based when this rigorous approach to evaluating it has shown the change is not likely due to chance but to the impact of the program.
