Discipline Guide
Want to throw a tantrum every time your toddler starts kicking and screaming? Have a teen that just won't listen to you? Get our discipline do's and don'ts and regain your sanity:
Set Clear Expectations
Do make sure your kids clearly understand your rules and expectations from an early age.
Don't be afraid to try different consequences for different children. What is punishment for one child (time alone in her room) may be fun for another child.
Follow Through
Do make sure you deal with the incident as soon as you can. Your child needs to understand what she did wrong, why, and what to do differently next time.
Don't go back on your word. If the consequences were promised, follow through, or else your child won't take you, or the rules, seriously.
Control Your Own Emotions
Do take a few minutes to cool down if you need to. Your kids will respond to your tone and your anger/frustration may escalate the situation.
Don't discipline in anger. Crouch down to your child's level and speak firmly. Don't yell from five feet above his head. Talk to your teen like a growing adult and your will probably find you get a better reaction.
Reconcile
Do tell your child how much you love him/her and be sure to give him a hug.
Don't apologize or go back on the consequences. Stay firm, but loving.
