3 Ways To Help Your Child Succeed In School

Read to Your Kids.  You've heard this a thousand times before, but recent studies show that kids take the most interest in reading when both mom and dad (no just mom) read to them.  So, find a favorite book and start reading together.

Know What They're Studying.  Know what's being taught and talk about it with your kids over dinner, or do activities that reinforce the subject matter.  Civil war on the docket this year?  Find a memorial to visit or watch a movie like Gettysburg.

Be There. 90% of success in life is just showing up.  Research shows that just by being present and talking to your kids about the importance of school, you will help them succeed.

Getting Involved in Your Child's School

When you get involved, not only does your child achieve more, but you can help create a school of high-achieving kids.  Here are some ideas for getting involved in your child's school.

Go Into Class. Use one of your vacation days or some personal time to volunteer in the classroom.  It's a good use of your leave - we promise.  Your mere presence communicates something powerful - kids often don't see men in school.

Meet the Teacher.  Attend back to school night and parent-teacher conferences.  This is a great way to keep up with what is being taught this year.

Coach a Team.  Coach your child's soccer, baseball, football, etc. team.  You'll be involved on a regular basis and you'll get to encourage your child's classmates.

Join the PTA/PTO.  Don't want to be the only man?  Recruit another dad to join you.
