Stay Connected To Your Kids While Traveling

Many dads face the challenge of being away from their children and families because of work-related travel.  But, with a little extra effort and intentionality, it is possible to stay connected. 

1. Write a quick note. Pick up a post card or write a quick note on the hotel stationery and send it your kids through the mail. Your child will be pleased that they got mail, but they will be even more pleased that their dad took time out of his schedule to write them.
   
   
2. Send e-mails or text messages.  Send an e-mail telling them about what you did that day. Let them know that you are thinking about and miss them.  Text them a quick "I love you" or "I miss you" (but make sure it's not while they're in class!). 
   
   
3. Buy a small present. A small gift from a place that you traveled to communicates to your children that you thought about them even while you were away working. Even a simple keepsake from your travels can be a constant reminder of your love.
   
   
4. Call or video chat. Making a quick call to check on your children is a great relationship investment. Ask your kids questions about what happened to them that day and just listen to what they tell you. Always tell them that you love them and that you will be home soon.
   
   Plus, if you have a webcam, or it is included in your computer, you can easily video chat with your kids for free using services like Google's video gchat.  If you don't have a webcam, it is a relatively cheap investment (even under $30).
   
   
5. Build a map together. Put a map in your child's room, then place a tack on the map where you will be traveling. This will allow your child to see where you are and know that you will be home soon.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.  Distance can too… if you are intentional. As a traveling dad, be encouraged that distance can actually make your relationships stronger. By following these simple tips you can stay connected to your child even when you are traveling.
