New Dads: Providing For Baby is Always An Important Step

February 10, 2012

For the first time father, the impending days of feeding, changing and playing with your new baby can seem exciting and daunting all at once. As a dad, you don’t want to let your family down by not being prepared. That’s why it’s important for fathers to be good providers with more than just material things and money. Baby needs a father’s total love and care, and providing for your child is one of the best ways to that. Here are some examples:

  • Dads should get involved from the beginning when it comes to providing for baby. The mother of your child performed the physical burden of carrying and birthing your child. Now it’s time for Dad to do his part. Changing diapers, giving soothing baths, attending doctor visits and simply playing with baby are easy ways fathers can provide and connect with their children early on. Establish the bond by taking on these tasks early and often.

  • Some new dads may be afraid to pick up their baby and touch them, thinking they may be too rough with their children. However, this is the best way dads bond with their baby. Believe it or not, Dad, you won’t hurt your child. You will learn how to hold and cradle your precious little one in no time. Studies show that touch between parents and babies help foster a healthy view of love in children.

  • When a baby cries, it’s the only way a child knows how to communicate their needs in their early stages. As a dad, it’s your job to respond to the call whether it’s for hunger, discomfort or simply your child wanting some attention. In a baby’s first three months, the attention you show as a dad will go a long way in developing your child’s emotional health. Baby then learns that Dad and Mom both are taking care of them and they have nothing to worry about.

You’ll be a great new dad, and will have the hang of these things in no time! It’s an exciting time of bonding and getting to know your little one. You’ll find more tips like this in our New Dad’s Pocket Guide. Click here to learn about this great resource.
