First Lady Laura Bush to Address National Fatherhood Initiative Gala Tuesday, April 19th in Washington

NFI Speech part of Proposed $40 Million White House Pro-Fatherhood Initiative

(WASHINGTON, DC) – First Lady Laura Bush, a longtime champion of strong, intact families, will address The National Fatherhood Initiative’s 2005 Awards Gala on Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel in Washington, DC.   President Bush has requested $40 million for a new fatherhood initiative to be awarded in competitive grants to faith-based and community organizations for skill-based marriage and parenting education.  Senator Evan Bayh and Congressman Joe Pitts will also attend in support of the NFI agenda.

Roland C. Warren, President of NFI, said: “We are honored that the First Lady will be addressing our awards dinner this year.  We’re also pleased to support the White House’s Helping America’s Youth Initiative by stressing the importance of fathers in children’s lives.”

FOX News Channel’s Fred Barnes, Orlando Magic Vice President Pat Williams, Country Music Star Buddy Jewell, and Atlanta Falcons All-Pro Allen Rossum are winners of the 2005 Fatherhood Awards.  ABC 7’s Leon Harris will emcee.

Of the awardees, Warren said, “This year’s winners have demonstrated a devotion to fatherhood that is advancing a transformation in the way our nation views the roles of fathers in children’s lives.  Our corporate awardees, through their advertising and business practices, are also providing a model that will transform our culture and inspire and encourage fathers to be the best dads they can be.”
