A National Survey on Marriage in America
Findings from a national telephone survey of 1,503 Americans age 18 and older conducted late in 2003 and early in 2004 that asked questions about attitudes toward marriage, aspirations for marriage, and past experiences with marriage. Released 11/17/05
Key Findings
- Americans clearly are not rejecting marriage. Most respondents were married, had been married, or wanted to marry.
- Respondents who married in their mid-twenties were more likely to be in intact marriages of good quality.
- Sixty-nine percent said their marriages were "very happy."
- "Lack of commitment" and "too much conflict" were most frequently cited as cause for divorce.
