Parenting Classes Focus On Father's Role
2/16/2013

The classes are in the style of group sessions, in which a coordinator focuses discussion among the dads in attendance, with topics ranging from working with the child's mother to children's growth.

"We want the guys to talk about things they don't normally talk about," Responsible Fatherhood Director Richard Beaty said. "We try to create an environment where it's really easy to talk about what's important to them — how to be a good parent, how to communicate with the mother of their children, and how to be a better dad for their children."

Fathering Connection classes take curriculum from the 24/7 Dad program developed by the National Fatherhood Initiative.

"It's research-based, well-received, has good credentials and a lot of people are using that," Beaty said.

Because the classes target young, low-income fathers, they also offer assistance in obtaining employment, or better employment, through things like resume assistance and help with job-searching.

"We really want it to be more than just, here's a list of jobs in your area and good luck," Beaty said. "We want it to be more active."

"There is no shortage of answers about how to improve our nation’s schools, including more charter schools, school vouchers, standardized testing, lower teacher-student ratios and performance-based hiring, pay and promotion of teachers.

However, what we find lacking in almost every debate about education reform is the role of families - especially fathers - and the support they can and should provide to ensure children’s educational success."

How Will Obama Help Single Parents?
1/19/2013

It's widely known that nearly 70 percent of black children are born out of wedlock, and a similar share are raised in single-parent households (which can also result from divorce or the death of a spouse). Many of these kids are doing fine, but as the National Fatherhood Initiative has noted, children living in single-parent homes are more likely to be poor, have emotional and behavioral problems, drop out of school, become teen parents and be incarcerated. They live in households with a median income that is one-quarter that of traditional two-parent households. Women head the majority of single-parent households.

National Fatherhood Initiative Launches Second Edition of InsideOut Dad®
9/27/2012

NFI’s team of fatherhood experts incorporated practitioner feedback and evaluation data from around the country to refresh the program, which is already standardized programming in 24 states and New York City.

InsideOut Dad® Second Edition is designed to reduce recidivism rates by reconnecting incarcerated fathers to their families, providing the motivation inmate fathers need to get out and stay out. For example, a three-year study by the Indiana Department of Correction found that fatherhood programs such as InsideOut Dad® were linked to prisoner return rates of less than 20%, compared to a national rate of nearly 38%.

These reductions in recidivism can lead to enormous cost savings for taxpayers and the criminal justice system. Nationally, the annual cost of incarceration per inmate is between $25,000 and $40,000. The cost to take an incarcerated father through the InsideOut Dad® program could be as little as $40.

A Man’s Most Important Role
6/26/2012

It goes without saying that mothers are widely recognized as being overworked and underpaid; their salary comes in hugs, hand-drawn refrigerator art and the hope that, one day, it will all be worth it. As June and Father’s Day rolls around, it’s important to remember the vital part that a father plays in a child’s life. As family roles have changed and evolved over recent years, so too has the role of the father.
