Community Education Centers, Inc. recently partnered with the National Fatherhood Initiative's® (NFI) InsideOut Dad™ program for a highly successful research project aimed at helping incarcerated fathers form healthy relationships with their children and families. NFI is the nation's leading provider of community-based fatherhood resources, and after a national search, the group chose CEC's residential facilities to deliver their program based on the company's industry-leading family services program. Lorain County — which already offers programs designed to offer help to fathers and strengthen their relationships with family — was selected as one of 12 in the state to create such a countywide program and become eligible for a $10,000 one-time seed grant from the state commission.
The group also heard from Ron J. Clark, director of national programming for the National Fatherhood Initiative, who was raised by his mother with four siblings in the Washington, D.C., area.
Clark said society has been far more likely to allocate money and resources to helping mothers and children. Full story

The idea is to prepare felons for parenting challenges they'll face later by getting them to communicate with their children now. Developed by the National Fatherhood Initiative, the "InsideOut Dad" program is meant to motivate offenders to stay out of prison by boosting family ties. Statistics from the Maryland-based nonprofit show children without fathers around are more likely to be poor, drop out of school and end up in prison themselves. Full story.

The Berkshire County Sheriff's Office has signed on to a national program aimed at improving relationships and communications skills between fathers and at-risk children. The "24-7 Dad" program was originated by the National Fatherhood Initiative of Germantown, Pa., a nonprofit advocacy group founded in 1994 to engage fathers living apart from their families in the lives of their children. In 2010, NFI contracted with the National Guard to provide over 40 installations with key fatherhood resources to help fathers and families stay connected through the stresses of military life. Installations across the country received resources like the Deployed Fathers and Families Guide, which helps families develop a plan for deployment, and The 7 Habits of a 24/7 Dad, a one-day workshop that installations can use to engage and educate fathers. The U.S. has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the developed world, and there is a clear tie to father absence. Developed through a partnership with Prison Fellowship, this program gives men the skills and knowledge they need to connect with their families and prepare for reentry. Twenty state Departments of Corrections now consider InsideOut Dad to be standardized reentry programming! Delaware has just announced that the InsideOut Dad program will be an official part of their state efforts. "The [Delaware] Department of Correction will commit to parnering with the National Fatherhood Initiative to engage and support the men who have children as they transition from our facilities to our communities," said Commissioner Carl C. Danberg. "We cannot accomplish all that we want in helping those in our custody return successfully to the community without the private and nonprofit community organizations' support."
