Why Knot? Marriage-Readiness Program

Why Knot?™ FAQ

Why did National Fatherhood Initiative create a marriage curriculum? What does marriage have to do with fathering?
Quite a lot, actually. NFI is dedicated to seeing that every child grows up with an involved, responsible, and committed father. Recent research shows that marriage is very strongly linked to successful parenting. Married fathers have the best opportunity to be involved, responsible, and committed.  Plus, contrary to what our culture tells us, research shows that men are actually more marriage-minded than women - they see marriage as more desirable or important.

Who is the target audience for Why Knot?™
In general, this curriculum is for unmarried men and fathers, ages 18-35. More specifically, this curriculum is designed to teach different segments of this audience, including, unmarried fathers ("fragile family" fathers), single-and-looking, single-and-not-looking but want marriage in the future, divorced, widowed, etc.

What are the theoretical underpinnings of Why Knot?™
Two human-behavior theories contributed to the development and structure of Why Knot?™. The first theory is the Transtheoretical (or Stage of Change) Model. This theory focuses on the decision making of an individual with a central proposition that individuals move through stages of change in their decision making and behavior-changing process. The second theory that contributed to the development of Why Knot?™ is the Theory of Planned Behavior (TpB). This theory describes three categories of beliefs that contribute to intention and ultimately, changed behavior.

How do I assess the impact of Why Knot?™
Why Knot?™ includes an evaluation tool, the Why Knot?™ Pre and Post-Survey, that assesses how the participants received the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs taught in the program, and whether or not it promoted change in the men. This data-gathering tool serves two functions: to help the men understand their own views of and readiness for marriage (as well as change, if any) and to help you evaluate the program (both its effectiveness and how the men in the program liked participating).
