Mothers Aren’t Leaving, But Dads Are

The role of fathers in America is changing. Fathers living with their children are more involved in their lives and spend more time with them. However, the fathers living with their children have fallen significantly in the last 50 years.

Back in 1960, only 11% of children in the U.S. lived apart from their fathers. By 2010, that share had risen to 27%. But mothers haven’t gone anywhere. The share of children living apart from their mothers increased from 4% in 1960 to 8% in 2010.
