Michael Phelps and His Father

Much like any Olympic athlete, Phelps’ family has played a major role in his career. Often the family makes all types of sacrifices with their time and finances in order for their talented family member to compete at the highest levels. We have seen how much moms matter to the athletes, but have heard little about dads from many of the stories for the 2012 London Games.

When Summer Sanders asked Michael about his relationship with his father in the interview below, Michael doesn’t seem comfortable talking about his dad. Summer points out that Michael’s mother and father separated when he was nine year’s old. After being asked about his dad, Phelps replied that his dad was involved before saying, “There’s not much communication, but there’s some, and I'm okay with that...”  

This Yahoo interview points out how much Michael’s mother and sisters influenced him and his career, but leaves one wondering just how involved Michael’s father has been in his life and swim career up until this point.
