Rain, Snow, Sleet or Hail... Nothing Can Stop a Great Dad!

Activities for the family on rainy or snowy daysRainy or snowy days can be dreary if you approach them with the belief that they limit the activities you can do with your children. Challenge yourself instead to think about these days as an opportunity to be an involved, responsible, and committed Dad.

There are literally a ton of activities you can share with your children and the entire family on a rainy or snowy day. We’ll provide you with some websites shortly that describe many of these activities. But, first, let's talk about the key to selecting activities for rainy or snowy days: a framework that will help you tap into the characteristics of a good Dad.

  • Ask your children what kinds of activities they’d like to do on a rainy or snowy day. The key to success in turning a rainy or snowy day outside into a sunny one inside is to select activities that engage your children's interests. Your children will appreciate the opportunity to have a say in what they will do with you. They'll be more engaged in activities they like, which will make the day enjoyable for everyone. Write the activities down on a list. Divide the activities into those that are different for each child and those that are the same or similar. Dividing the activities in this way will allow you to spend time with each child doing something he or she enjoys, and to spend time together as a family. Spending time alone with each child and as a family are important characteristics of a good Dad.
  • Choose fun activities that will help you nurture and guide your children. Two more characteristics of a good Dad are the ability to have fun with your children and to nurture and guide them. Choose activities that allow you to combine both characteristics.
  • Choose activities with a purpose. Another characteristic of a good dad is the ability to pass on values and morals that will help your children to successfully navigate their way through life. Select activities that have an underlying value or moral that you’d like to teach your children.
  • Choose activities that can become a family tradition. Good Dads establish family traditions because they create memories that will last a lifetime and connect one generation to another. The activities you choose can become the traditional activities that your family does on rainy or snowy days and that your children may carry on with your grandchildren.

And in case you and your family are at a loss for ideas, visit the websites below that describe activities that will help you turn a rainy or snowy day outside into a sunny day inside.
