How To Soothe a Crying Baby

Crying is one of the only ways your baby can communicate with you.  Check to see if your baby is comfortable, has been fed and changed.  If so, here are five strategies to soothe your baby:

Swaddling.  Babies like to be held close.  Snuggle your child in a soft blank

Side/Stomach.  Hold your baby on her side or stomach

Shhhhh. Make this soothing noise for your child.

Swinging.  Gently rock your arms or place your child safely in an infant swing.

Sucking.  Give your child a pacifier.

Caring for a crying baby can be frustrating - and intimidating - but stay patient and use a gentle touch.  Use this time to bond with your newborn and take turns with mom so you can both get some much-needed sleep.

If your child is three months or older...

Change Positions.  Some children prefer to sit up while others will want to lie down.

Move Around.  Bounce your child, try a swing, or an exercise seat.

Distract.  Show your child a small toy or mirror, or turn on some upbeat music.
