A Michigan lawyer who helped save his two sons after a mysterious car bomb attack was honored for his heroic act along with 11 other persons in Monroe County, just south of Detroit. Last September, Erik Chappell was riding home with his boys from football practice when the car exploded while on the highway. Last night in Lasalle, Monroe County officials praised Chappell for stepping into action.
During the event, Chappell did not speak of the investigation regarding the bombing but instead focused on the health of himself and his children. “I could tell you that we found out today that with respect to my youngest son we are as of today graduated from all physical therapy," said Chappell at the honors gathering.
Chappell further said, ““We were in a pretty dark place. But we are so blessed to be part of this community. The support uplifted us.”
Chappell won the Adult Good Samaritan Award for making sure his sons Grant, 13, and Cole, 11, were safe while trying to alert emergency officials to his location. Chappell thanked the Monroe citizens for the honor, then bringing his sons on stage with him.
“These are the most courageous people I know,” he said. “I think they get the award.”
