When I started writing The 24:7 Dad: 12 Habits of Confident Fathers, I wasn’t concerned about whether I could write a unique, helpful book.

I was concerned about whether anyone would use it.

Despite my concern, I trusted that the human service organizations National Fatherhood Initiative® partners with would see the book’s benefits for the dads they serve. I placed even more trust in their ability to integrate the book into their father-inclusive efforts in creative ways.

I’m happy to report that my trust was well-placed. Despite that it’s been only three months since the book’s release, more than 20 “early adopters” have placed it in dads’ hands. Spread across the country, these National Fatherhood Initiative® partners have been largely responsible for the book’s early success.

How Organizations Are Using The 24:7 Dad

The table below includes select examples.

Partner Book Uses
Coshocton County Fatherhood Initiative (OH)
  • Included copies in “goodies” bags for 60 dads attending a dad-child outing at a Triple A baseball game. Created a bookmark and placed it in the book. One side advertised a Father’s Day event and the initiative’s fatherhood program. The other side provided a QR code to write a book review.
  • Partnered with the public library to hold a drawing for five free copies during June.
Allegheny Intermediate Unit (Pittsburgh, PA)
  • Distributed the book at a June fatherhood conference and led a discussion about the book with 150 dads.
City of Baytown (TX)
  • Distributed copies to city employees and community leaders who helped design the city’s fatherhood initiative.
  • Gave copies to a local nonprofit coordinating the initiative for the dads it serves.
  • Also created a bookmark advertising the initiative and a link to review the book.
Utah State University
  • Shared the book with community leaders across Utah, including county sheriffs and city council members.
  • Gave it to 20+ InsideOut Dad® facilitators. Used it for professional development. Assigned portions for reading and discussed those portions during weekly facilitator meetings.
  • Gave it to InsideOut Dad® graduates as a gift and additional learning opportunity.
The Children’s Institute (CA)
  • Distributed the book at a community event focused on physical and mental health attended by 24:7 Dad® graduates/alumni and families. This event included a walk around a local lake.
  • Provided it to 24:7 Dad® facilitators to support their personal and professional development.

More Ways to Use the Book with Fathers

In addition to those creative ways, some general ways to use the book include:

  • Using it as a self-paced resource for fathers who won’t or can’t participate in a fatherhood or parenting program.
  • Mentoring fathers one-on-one or in groups. Assign portions to read between meetings. (Go to confidentfathers.com to download the free Mentoring Guide and Worksheet.)
  • Giving it to fathers participating in 24:7 Dad® or another fatherhood or parenting program.
    • Reinforcing or building on the program’s topics.
    • Assigning portions of it as “homework” between sessions.
    • Using it as a graduation gift for continued learning.
  • Giving it to dads attending an event, such as a fatherhood conference/summit, Lunch and Learn, or father-child outing.
  • Giving it to mothers as a tool for increasing involvement of their children’s father.
  • Giving it to any staff who interact with fathers as a professional development tool.

I’m so glad that my concern about whether anyone would use the book was unfounded. It’s an excellent stand-alone or complementary fathering resource. And here’s the best part…
