When Men and Fathers Commit to Help a Fatherless Boy

This blog reposted from Patheos.com with permission from Roland Warren.

On the night of February 12, 2012, I received a call with the most dreaded news. Jay Young, one of my best friends died unexpectedly. He was just 50 years old. It was a tough loss. We had been friends for over 30 years since our freshman year in college at Princeton University. Moreover, along with a loving wife, he left a 12-year-old son Jared, who would have to make the perilous journey from boyhood to manhood without the steadfast guidance of his loving father.

As my wife will gladly tell you, I run very little risk of being called “handy” with a hammer or with any other tool. Indeed, it’s pretty clear that when God was passing out the carpentry and mechanical skills, I must have been busy reading the Wall Street Journal!

Given this genetic foible in my manhood, I have been forced to live vicariously through the handiness of others by watching episodes of home makeover shows or reading “do it yourself” magazines. In fact, I was doing just that when I can across an article that intrigued me.

The teacher of the class gave her students what should have been an easy homework assignment. They were to develop a family tree.

However, when the students returned to class with the completed assignments, my friend noticed a disturbing pattern.

Father Facts are Pesky Things

We get a lot of inquiries here at NFI about “trends in fatherhood.” One of the most common “trends” people want to know about is the rising number of single fathers in the country. I hear this inquiry so often that I started to believe it was true, until I actually looked at the data.

According to the US Census Bureau, 4.2 percent of children lived in “father only” homes in 2000. In 2012, that number dropped, yes dropped, to 3.96 percent. Not a huge drop, but a drop nonetheless.
